About

I produced Tapestry: Revisited as a side project. I have long been fascinated by Carole King and the success of Tapestry. After a stint at blip.fm, I somehow synthesized the idea that I could produce a remake of this album. While not a musician, I decided the Covid-19 Pandemic would be good time to launch this project, with the intent of releasing it in conjunction of the 50th Anniversary of the original release. Over Zoom, I reached out to friends to get this album made.

I live my real life in Tech. I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in Computer Science from the University of Washington. I’ve done research stints at AT&T Bell Labs, the Olivetti Research Center, and at the University of Washington. I’ve held academic positions in the American Ethnic Studies and Computer Science&Engineering departments at the UW. My life has been that of a “system hacker” diving into the bowels of operating systems and distributed systems. I’ve successfully started and exited a few companies (BroadVision, MerchantCircle, and Sakura Media) along the way. Like most successful systems folks, I’m now deep down the path of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

I am currently working on a computer hardware startup (http://www.jakobia.com) with Mark Oskin. The idea has been initially funded by the National Science Foundation (grant #2013802). The company aims to revolutionize Hardware Development through Open Source, much as Open Source has transformed Software Development.

Finally, I am writing a book about my grandfather, Kanekichi Yamamoto. This biography (www.secondsonrising.com) is a surprising and controversial counter-narrative to the story most people are only beginning to hear — the fate of Japanese Americans during World War II. My goal is to produce a Hollywood blockbuster movie to tell this story. Stay tuned.

I’d be remiss in not mentioning the real artists on Tapestry: Revisited — Paul, Bonnie, Daniel, Antoinette, Stacey, Maya, Jeff, Jennifer, John, Ginny. They are the people that really made Tapestry: Revisited possible. I was just the “product (project) manager” that pulled everything together. I thank you all for indulging me in my tribute to Carole on the 50 Anniversary of Tapestry.
