Tapestry

Bonnie Foxley

My life has been a tapestry of rich and royal hue
An everlasting vision of the ever-changing view
A wondrous, woven magic in bits of blue and gold
A tapestry to feel and see, impossible to hold

Once amid the soft silver sadness in the sky
There came a man of fortune, a drifter passing by
He wore a torn and tattered cloth around his leathered hide
And a coat of many colors, yellow-green on either side

As I was singing this song, I couldn’t help but think that Carole was writing about her life and journey of faith. She seems thankful for the beautiful life she has been blessed with but also acknowledged the ups and downs she experienced. Faith was there early on; maybe through Sunday school (Joseph’s coat of many colors) and the Jesus Movement of the 70’s (torn and tattered cloth of the Hippie Jesus) but it seemed to let her down when she experienced hardship. Later in the song, she then realized that faith and maybe God, to her relief, (typified by the Gandolf-like figure) had always been there, especially in times of grief…  Bonnie
